The Seeds of the Sore

Description

In the Bed of Decomposition Shall Kindle the Seeds of Inflammatory (The Seeds of the Sore)
Acrylic and PVA on canvas

My final contribution to the collection to the FMP (Final Major Project) was "In the Bed of Decomposition Shall Kindle the Seeds of Inflammatory" or also known as its shortened title: "The Seeds of the Sore". This piece was originally a dark drawing I did during the course earlier this year. I saw it again and was compelled to reproduce it in acrylic form [in desperation to achieve something normal].

The piece began shortly after taking these two photographs of the sky out our back window of our flat, the sun was setting and casting purple, magenta and violet blue colours across the sky. This was simply beautiful and I was inspired to paint that very thing. By experimenting with PVA and acrylics, I braved mixing blues and reds separately with PVA and thickly applied them to the sky area of the image. This dribbled a little, but any noticeable dripping was corrected; however in saying that, it was very important for the gravitational pull to set the PVA in layers that were heavier towards the bottom, to effectively present the clouds and reflect the properties concerning weight of rain or storm clouds.

The rest of the painting was rather improvised, of course firstly being referenced from the drawing. The blood that is seeping from the left hand figure’s eye was done by mixing a load of PVA with red acrylic and for that to be painted on thickly to let the weight of the consistency to roll down in similar consistency of which blood would actually have. This also dried to have a nice effect that was not too heavily pigment driven and the transparency allowed the background to darken it to a nice tone of red/burgundy.

This piece is about the earth and its matter. It is about how elements combine and live and excrete waste and die, and at the end of their existence it all decomposes into a basic compound that is inevitably recycled into the big picture. I find great awe when looking at the planet as a whole, perceiving the forces of nature and its relentless struggle against man-kind to simply continue. The earth has an elemental and cosmic balance of which we are often quick to disregard.

This piece is also about grief. We take for granted things and only when they are gone do we feel regretful or incomplete. In a way this is like the circle of life; if there is an imbalance in the earth, natural disasters will occur as all of the jig-saw pieces of the puzzle try to rectify and smoothen over the missing piece.

This piece could also be about the afterlife, for example waking up in hell, where everyone who is alive is dead and everyone who has succumbed to hell is very much alive.

This piece did not appear in my final exhibition as the space provided for me was to hold works that were more relating the course teachings. Which SUCKED tbh because this was indeed the last painting and I had not managed to create anything large or particularly stunning and this was immediately criticized. Thanks y'all for looking ;]

Strikes me as borderline reminiscent of the works of Frida Kahlo... I like it.

The red especially is such a striking contrast to everything else, but I think the posture of the body on the right is my favorite section by far.
